Powerful Spoken Word Artists Move From Stage to Page with New Books

Looking for powerful spoken word artists who inspire with every word and redefine what poetry can do? Meet Jaylene Clark Owens and Gabriel Ramirez. Two standout voices whose work spans the stage, screen, and now, the world of literature. Through their newest books, both artists are extending the reach of their messages to readers across the board.

Jaylene Clark Owens, a Harlem native now based in the Greater Philadelphia Region, is an award-winning actress, poet, and performer. Her viral spoken word piece, “A Black Girl and Her Braids,” celebrated Black beauty and identity, and now, it’s being transformed into a children’s picture book! Scheduled for release in January 2026 with Penguin Random House, the book adapts Jaylene’s poetry for young readers, carrying her themes of empowerment and self-love into classrooms, libraries, and homes nationwide.

Jaylene’s voice reaches even further through her role on PBS Kids’ Albie’s Elevator, where she plays Rosie, the warm building manager who helps children process big feelings through music and art. She’s also a recurring character on Law & Order, and a company member at the Wilma Theater, where she merges poetry with community-building events and open mics.

On the literary front, Gabriel Ramirez, another of today’s most compelling powerful spoken word artists, has just released a bold and beautifully illustrated chapbook titled IF PIT BULLS HAD A GOD IT’D BE A PIT BULL (The Head & The Hand Press). This unique book uses the imagery of the Pit Bull to explore systemic injustice, grief, masculinity, and resilience. The vivid artwork by Rushawn Stanley, aka “Scum Lizard,” visually complements Gabriel’s raw, lyrical storytelling.

This chapbook emerged from the Riverwards Chapbook Series, an innovative Philadelphia initiative that connects local writers and visual artists to co-create works that reflect shared values and visions. Gabriel’s partnership with Scum Lizard was selected as one of three final pairings in this pilot program and is a standout example of interdisciplinary collaboration.

In addition to the chapbook, Gabriel is also the author of We’re Community, a children’s book that fosters empathy, inclusion, and belonging. Named a 2024–2025 CantoMundo Poetry Coalition Fellow, Gabriel has received numerous fellowships and performed at the United Nations, the Apollo Theater, and Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre.

Together, Jaylene and Gabriel continue to shape the future of poetry as powerful spoken word artists whose words transcend the mic. Their books are not just an extension of their craft, they are meaningful tools for education, reflection, and connection.

Whether you experience their work live or on the page, these powerful spoken word artists are voices you’ll want to follow, remember, and share. Contact Neon Entertainment today to bring Jaylene Clark Owens or Gabriel Ramirez to your next event!
